Yellow Ribbon Program in Missouri: Extra Tuition Coverage

The Yellow Ribbon Program is available to eligible Post-9/11 GI Bill beneficiaries (38 U.S.C. § 3319). Yellow Ribbon provides institution-specific aid matching. The VA matches dollar-for-dollar what the school contributes toward tuition and mandatory fees above the Post-9/11 GI Bill maximum. As of 2024, the Post-9/11 GI Bill maximum is $2,152 per month for full-time students at four-year institutions. The actual Yellow Ribbon payment depends entirely on: (1) the participating school's contribution amount, and (2) your remaining GI Bill entitlement.

Example: If a school contributes $5,000 toward tuition above the GI Bill cap, VA matches with $5,000. Maximum annual Yellow Ribbon is capped at the difference between school charges and the Post-9/11 GI Bill maximum. For graduate programs, rates may differ by institution. All Yellow Ribbon payments are adjusted annually with COLA increases to the Post-9/11 GI Bill. Missouri does not provide a separate state-level Yellow Ribbon Program or state matching funds for this federal benefit. The Yellow Ribbon Program is exclusively a federal initiative administered by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, with participating institutions contributing their own funds matched by VA.

Yellow Ribbon claims are commonly denied for these reasons:

Ensure all documents are current and match your legal name exactly. Your CVSO can review your application packet before submission to catch errors.

**Program-Level Issues:** Some denials occur because a specific program at a participating school is not VA-approved. Verify your program is accredited and VA-approved before enrolling. Contact your school's certifying official to confirm.
