Indiana Veterans Driver's Licence Designation

The Indiana veteran driver ID designation is a state benefit and does not follow federal eligibility standards. However, to qualify, you must be a veteran of the United States Armed Forces (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, or Space Force) with an honorable discharge or a general discharge under honorable conditions. There is no minimum service length requirement—veterans who served even one day and received an honorable discharge qualify.

You must be a current Indiana resident and hold a valid Indiana driver license or state ID card. If you are applying for a driver license or ID card for the first time, the veteran designation can be added during that initial application at no additional cost. The designation applies to both regular driver licenses and state identification cards issued to individuals who do not drive.

Dishonorable discharge, discharges for misconduct, or failure to receive an honorable discharge disqualifies you from this designation. Indiana law does not permit the veteran marking on licenses held by veterans with other discharge types. The state verifies your discharge status through your DD Form 214 or equivalent military discharge documentation.

Indiana provides a voluntary veteran designation on driver licenses and state ID cards at no cost to eligible veterans. This state-specific benefit allows you to display your military service on your primary identification document, which can offer practical advantages during routine interactions with law enforcement, emergency responders, and other officials.

The veteran designation appears on the front of your card as a printed marking, making your veteran status immediately visible. There is no separate application process beyond your standard driver license or ID renewal—you simply request the veteran designation when you apply for or renew your license or ID at a BMV branch.

Indiana does not layer federal benefits on top of this state designation; it is purely a state-issued patriotic marking. The designation is valid for the same period as your driver license or ID card and automatically renews when you renew your license. Unlike federal VA benefits, this designation carries no eligibility income or asset limits and does not affect your eligibility for other state or federal veterans benefits.

The most common reason claims are denied is submission of invalid military discharge documentation. If your DD Form 214 shows a discharge type other than honorable (such as general discharge under other than honorable conditions, bad conduct discharge, or dishonorable discharge), you will be ineligible. Ensure your discharge papers clearly state "Honorable Discharge" or "General Discharge Under Honorable Conditions."

Second, some veterans submit incomplete discharge documentation. The BMV requires official military discharge records—copies must be legible and include the discharge status, service branch, and service dates. Blurry photocopies, documents missing the discharge type field, or unofficial documents are often rejected. Always bring the original DD Form 214 or obtain an official copy from the National Archives if your copy is unclear.

Third, residency issues cause denials. You must be an Indiana resident to add the veteran designation to an Indiana license. If your proof of residency is outdated or does not match your address, the BMV may deny the application. Bring a recent utility bill, lease, or mortgage statement dated within 60 days.

Fourth, expired identification will delay your application. Your photo ID must be valid; an expired passport or driver license will not be accepted as proof of identity. If your current license is expired, obtain a temporary ID or use your passport.

To strengthen your application, bring both an original DD Form 214 and one backup copy, ensure all documents are recent and legible, and verify your Indiana residency documentation before visiting the BMV.

The Indiana veteran driver ID designation is not subject to the federal VA appeals process because it is a state benefit administered by the Indiana BMV, not the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. If your application is denied or your request is not processed correctly, you have state-level recourse through Indiana's BMV system.
